RHB Singapore Cup: Global Drubs Nagaworld To Qualify For Quarter-Finals

Written by: Shawn Lim

Global FC became the third team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup after a resounding 5-0 victory over Nagaworld FC in the preliminary round at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday night.

Hikaru Minegishi's early brace set the Filipinos on their way to victory, but goals from Mario Clarino, Omid Nazari and Daisuke Sato ensured that Global join the likes of Home United and Geylang International in the next round of the competition, where they will meet Tampines Rovers.

The designated hosts had began brightly at the ground where they endured another 5-0 defeat to Home United on their previous visit in 2014, almost opening the scoring minutes after kick off when Park Yongjun latched onto a long ball and went through on goal.

However, Global custodian Patrick Deyto came rushing off his line to parry away the South Korean's fierce drive at goal.

Having survived the early scare, Global began to press with purpose and found the breakthrough with their first shot on target in the ninth minute when Clarino's cross was met at the far post by Minegishi, who took a touch before slamming the ball into the back of the net.

Nagaworld quickly fell behind again when they failed to clear their lines after Omid's cross came off the foot of the post and Minegishi stabbed home the rebound from a similar position.

Befolo Privat had a wonderful chance to reduce the deficit for Nagaworld in the 16th minute after Global failed to deal with Sos Suhana's misplaced pass, but Deyto got down well to deny the Cameroonian's shot at goal.

Deyto's agility was put to the test again 10 minutes later when Sos played Park through on goal with a defence-splitting pass and the goalkeeper brilliantly saved the South Korean's effort with his legs.

The game was well and truly over for Nagaworld in the 32nd minute after Clarino headed home Misagh Bahadoran's corner at close range.

The Cambodians came out after the break determined to reduce the arrears and almost succeeded in the 49th minute when Tum Sary made a diagonal run across the 18-yard box to meet Privat's lofted pass, but the midfielder's header flew narrowly wide of the mark.

Global however, gradually regain a foothold in the game and could have added a fourth in the 54th minute when Omid attempted a low piledriver at the edge of the box, but Nagaworld custodian York Ary got down well to smother the ball.

Matthew Hartmann then sent Omid through on goal on the hour mark, but the Swedish born Iranian-Filipino's shot flashed wide of the near post.

There was no stopping the impressive Omid from scoring though, and he eventually found the back of the net in the 77th minute when he sold a dummy to a defender after being played through on goal by Misagh, before finishing with aplomb.

Global refused to show any mercy to the Cambodians in spite of their huge lead and added a fifth when Sato's audacious chip from 25-yards out found the back of the net.

There could have been a sixth goal for the visitors in stoppage time when they were awared a penalty, but York dove the right way to push Misagh's spot-kick on to the post and away to safety.

Nagaworld coach Meas Channa: "It was very tough for my team today. We had chances to score in the first-half but we didn't. If we scored, maybe we could have a chance.

"Global had three chances in the first-half and they scored three goals. Football is like this."

Global FC coach Leigh Manson: "It wasn't an easy win because the players had to work hard for the result. A couple of them came off with cramps, which showed how hard they worked.

"It was the first time we have played a top Cambodian team, so it was interesting to compare ourselves with them.

"I am very very happy with the clean sheet today because our goalkeeper made three very good saves."
